Welcome!Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a strong, muscular, active hound. They are handsome, athletic dogs capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed. They have a dignified temperament and are devoted and affectionate to their owners. Their unique feature is the ridge on the back. They have native origins in southern Africa, where they were used to track and bay lions. They truly are exceptional!
The ancestors of our Ridgebacks were not only champions but also recently migrated to the United States from South Africa, where many of them were registered with the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA). While we started our Ridgeback journey for the love of the breed, as we have grown closer to our pets and learned more about their personalities and their lineage, we have developed a goal of maintaining their southern African heritage. According to the KUSA, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is presently the only registered breed indigenous to southern Africa. Its forbears can be traced to the Cape Colony of southern Africa where they crossed with the early pioneers’ dogs and the semi domesticated, ridged, Hottentot hunting dogs. Hunting mainly in groups of two or three, the original function of the Rhodesian Ridgeback, or Lion Dog, was to track game, especially lion, and with great agility, keep it at bay until the arrival of the hunter. The original standard, which was drafted by F.R.Barnes, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, in 1922, was based on that of the Dalmatian and was approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1926. Variations of this standard are still used today. We love our pets who have joined our home and wish to share the experience with others who have a love for the breed. We are not a kennel. We are a large family that wanted to share our acreage and home and expand our family with these sweet Ridgebacks! |
